Other grander parts of our islands may satisfy those who crave the stimulus of romantic scenery but, for those who treasure all that is simple and enduring about rural England, the unassuming landscape of Sussex has few, if any, rivals. For some the winding lanes and sleepy villages of the Weald and high woods and commons of Ashdown Forest are the very heart of the country.
