In late June 1942, Bud and Connie Helmericks paddled down the Tanana River to the Yukon River In a homemade canoe. During the summer, they floated down the Yukon and then portaged over to the Kuskokwim River and hauled out in Bethel on the Bering Sea in November, pulling the last few miles through thickening ice pack.
