The Sopranos spans one day in the lives of six schoolgirls from the Port. As part of the choir of their school they travel by coach to participate in an inter-school singing competition. Warner provides every nuance of their characters in a sustained tour de force. It is just as though one were eavesdropping. This is the most profound of Warner s books. His sense of place and atmosphere remains extraordinarily intense. Guardian. Compassionate and riotously funny. It is a long time since I read a novel which had me rocking with laughter. The Times.
