In 1940s Texas, Isaiah, an African American soldier, returns to his hometown after fighting in World War II. His bitter memories of his father's murder there make it unlikely he'll stay in town for long, since Gideon, Texas, is still a hotbed of racism.But when Isaiah reconnects with Angel, his white childhood friend, he decides to stay on for a short while. Angel had written to him while he was overseas, and their relationship had blossomed from that of childhood friends. It is more grown up and becoming more intimate.In time, and despite incredible obstacles, Isaiah and Angel fall deeply in love.
