The Far Land

With the farewell prayer of her Presbyterian minister ― "protect this young sister in that far land where sin doth abound and Satan lifteth up his head" ― ringing in her ears, young Eva MacLean sets out from "civilized" Ontario to the far land of Hazelton in northwestern British Columbia in 1911. Eager for adventure but fearful ― as a sheltered young wornan of that era would be ― Eva recounts her experiences in Hazelton with her minister/ veterinarian hushand, Dan. Explaining why he spends more time doctoring than preaching, he says to Eva: I can reach more people by curing their horses than trying to save their souls."
