Writing as J. Leslie Mitchell, Lewis Grassic Gibbon tells the semiautobiographical story of Malcolm Maudsley, who grows up before World War I in the Aberdeenshire countryside that was later to form the backdrop for Gibbon's Scot's Quair Trilogy.
