Rebellion Revisited: A History Of Sumner County, Tennessee From 1861 To 1870

The anguish and suffering caused by Civil War and Reconstruction dominated life in Sumner County, Tennessee, from 1861–1870. The high drama of the wrenching decision to leave the Union in 1861, the rush to Confederate colors, and the first battle in the county are recreated with penetrating perception and accuracy. The turmoil and tension of Reconstruction from 1865–1870 are illustrated by the bitter contest to control and operate government, the discouraging attempts to revive a devastated economy, and the confused efforts to adjust to the uncertain role of the new black citizen.
