Опис
This volume takes up the story of Lubbock with the end of World War 11 at the approximate point where its predecessor left off when it was published in 1962 by the West Texas Museum Association. The focus is on the development of a relatively small city into one of 187,000 people, ranking eighth in size in the state and the center of a metropolitan district. Although the chapters are separate entities reflecting the insights of their authors, they call attention to the growing complexity of the city's life as it has expanded in size and space on what once were uninhabited plains. The continuing process of change shows through clearly in the chapters on agriculture, business and industry, demographic changes, political life, education and the growth of a medical center, religion, sports, and cultural life. CONTRIBUTORS: With two exceptions the authors are members of the faculty of Texas Tech University. Len Ainsworth is professor of education and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and has written on topics in education. Paul Chalfant is professor and chairman of the Department of Sociology and has written extensively on sociological subjects. Lawrence Graves is emeritus professor of history and emeritus dean of Arts and Sciences. Jim Harper is associate professor of history and director of honors studies. Lewis Hill is professor of economics; James Jonish is professor and former chairman of the Department of Economics; both have written extensively in economics. Richard Mason is a field representative of the Southwest Collection. David Murrah assembled the photographs; he is director of the Southwest Collection and a specialist in Texas History. Willard Rollings is a staff member at the Newberry Library. Roger Schaefer is associate professor of political science. John Wunder, former associate professor of history at Texas Tech and now professor and head of the Department of History at Clemson University, is a specialist in western history.
