La novela esta protagonizada por el inspector William Monk, su esposa Hester y el amigo de ambos, el juez Oliver Rathbone. Hester, que es enfermera en un centro para prostitutas y mujeres de la calle, por ayudar a una companera, Josephine Raleigh, investiga el fraude llevado a cabo por un ministro de la iglesia, Abel Taft, que extorsiona a sus feligreses mas devotos, haciendoles pensar que el dinero va a los pobres, y que ha causado la ruina de varios, que no quieren denunciarle por verguenza.
