Do - It - Yourself kit to understand Magnetic brakes (also called electro-mechanical brakes or EM brakes) slow or stop motion using electromagnetic force to apply mechanical resistance (friction). HOW IT WORKS Insert 9V Battery into the snap. You will see that the pulley will start rotating. Now slowly move the upper slider towards the rotating pulley. Take the slider near and near to the pulley. see… what happens… you will notice that the rotation of pulley gradually decreases. Why Here the rotation decreases because the rotating metal plate breaks the magnetic field lines (which creates eddy current) of Neodymium magnet as it comes closer to it and the brake is applied. This principle is used practically in Maglev train to apply brake very slowly.(In maglev train, brake cannot be applied suddenly.) Here, instead of aluminum plate you can also use other metal plate, but it must be Non Iron only. Because Iron plate will quickly attracts the magnet.
