James Donovan Gautier Jr. distinguished himself by meritorious service while engaged in ground combat against an enemy of the United States in defense of the Philippine Islands from January 2, 1942 to September 12, 1945. Displaying magnificent courage and devotion to duty, Sgt. Gautier inflicted heavy losses while engaging an enemy force of superior size and weaponry. Sgt. Gautier displayed undaunted valor, not only in the engagement of the enemy in combat, but in his conduct under impossible and unbearable conditions while being held as a prisoner of war from April 9, 1942 to September 12, 1945.
