History of Albemarle County In Virginia, giving some account of what it was by nature, of what it was made by man, and of some of the men who made it, by Reverend Edgar Woods. Originally published in 1901, reprinted in 1989 by Heritage Books, Inc. The first third of this volume consists of a history of Albemarle county from its first settlement about 1727 down to the Mid-1800's. there are numerous references to the early settlers in the historical chapters, but the real value of the book lies in the final two thirds, which consists primarily of family histories of about 200 families. There are also several appendixes containing petitions, militia rolls, lists of officials, etc. Of particular interest is a listing of Albemarle residents who emigrated to other states which specifies the state and county to which they removed. There is also a list of deaths from 1744 to 1890. A new name index has been added.
