the purpose of the dictionary is to teach beginning level Chinese Characters. It is suitable for beginners who are non-native speakers of Chinese or are of the overseas Chinese community. The 300 most common characters were chosen for this dictionary by combining frequency of occurrence statistics for elementary school usage in both Taiwan and Mainland China. By mastering these 300 Characters, the learner will be able to recognize 65% of the characters on the average page of text. While the focus of this edition is on simplified characters, traditional character forms are also provided. Each dictionary entry includes the character's radical, frequency of occurrence, total number of strokes, pinyin, mandarin phonetic symbol( also know as Bopomofo), english definition, and stroke order. In addition, plenty of vocabulary words and example sentences are provided. For the convenience of learning, both pinyin and an English translation are provided for each example word and sentence. Sentences which are difficut to traslate directly are parapgrased. Each character comes with an illustration, usually that of the character's most concrete meaning. For characters with more abstract meanings, given illustrations focus on word or example sentence meanings. The illustrations are vivid and lively, easy to understand, and complementary to the given character meanings. the combination of rich and interesting illustrations along with the character can pique the learner's interesting and increase understanding. throughout the book, there are also 18 special columns aimed at giving tips for learning Chinese characters, which provide for a more fun, interesting, and in-depth study.
