Книга содержит переводы наиболее ранних памятников, содержащих сведения о создании славянской письменности - созданных во второй половине IX в. в Великой Моравии пространных житий создателей славянской письменности - Кирилла и Мефодия и написанного в конце IX в. в Болгарии сочинения черноризца Храбра "О письменах". Эти памятники представляют собой не только ценнейшие исторические свидетельства, но и первые оригинальные произведения на славянском языке. Перевод сопровождается вводной статьей, содержащей характеристику тех исторических условий, в которых была создана и начала развиваться славянская письменность, а также тех условий, в которых возникли эти памятники. Книга включает подробный комментарий к текстам памятников, содержащий объяснение различных терминов, сведения об упомянутых в текстах лицах и событиях, указания на использованные автором источники.
