He found that ranchers raising cattle in the rugged mountainous regions still favor horses as superior and more reliable method of travel over four wheelers and motorbikes. These families treated him to a rare glimpse of a struggling but enduring cowboy culture. More than just punching cows, he saw a living, breathing philosophy; a cowboy’s relation to the animals he tended, the land that he depended on, and, above all, his Creator. Families were not groups of genetically similar individuals, but teams that relied upon one another for day-to-day survival. A good horse wasn’t considered a commodity, but a trusted friend. A saddle, handed down through generations, connected a young girl with her long since laid to rest great-grandfather.
